The roof consists of two saddle surfaces spanning between three arches. The roof is 23.2 m high at its zenith. The cable nets are covered with wood decking. The arena is named in honor of David S. Ingalls '20, who twice captained the Yale hockey team, and his son David Jr. '56 who served as captain of his freshman and varsity teams. Gifts from the Ingalls family provided the bulk of the funding for its construction. The construction cost was $ 1,500,000 USD, which was twice the original budget. In 1991, renovations totaling $ 1,500,000 USD were performed on the rink surface and ice-making system.
